The Best Cure For A Cold Sore

The Herpes simplex virus infection is hardly ever cured, but there are various ways to choose from for the best cure for a cold sore that really works. These sores are small, swollen blisters (filled with fluid) on the lips, mouth, or nostril, and these can be so itchy and painful.

Basically, the sores are best treated at the start of the symptoms. When you see the first sign of an outbreak, do a cold compress using ice cubes or ice bags. Perform this for around ten minutes and do repetitions for one hour or so (with ten minute intervals). This will lessen the swelling and pain. Then you can select from any of the treatments below for the best cure for a cold sore:

1. Pills

You can take acyclovir or any drugs based on it like Zovirax, Denavir, Famvir and Valtrex. These drugs inhibit the replication of the virus leading to a decreased period of the sore outbreak. Lysine, an amino acid, is also effective in offsetting the viral activities. You can take lysine supplements on a daily basis - 2000 to 3000 mg.

2. Creams/gels

You can apply creams to your cold sores to block the outbreak and help in making the sores heal faster. Examples of these creams are Abreva and Quantum Super Lysine. Gels (like Herpetrol and Aloe gel) are also helpful in easing the discomfort such as pain and itch. And these have a protective film that shields the sores during the treatment.

3. Herbs

You can gather extracts from peppermint or sage and apply a few drops on your sores. These herbs have a natural antiviral property that is good for these sores. Aloe Vera is also effective - just rub gently the fleshy pulp of the Aloe Vera into your sores for maximum effect.

All of these treatments have been tested and proven.
